Since its foundation in 1971, C.P. Company has been one of the most pioneering brand in sportswear history. From the very beginning, one of the pillar of the brand has been the Garment Dyeing: an alchemical technique that consists in colouring a garment – usually made from white or raw un-coloured fabric – only in a final manufacturing step, subsequent to being fully-fashioned. It is not a secret that one of the first member of Massimo Osti team was a chemist. In the decades, Osti works not only on fabrics, but also on new shapes and types of outerwear.
Inspired by the nature and how men relate with it in its environment, C.P. Company creates the two masterpieces of its story: the Explorer and the Goggle jackets. The Nineties are the years dedicated to a more urban focus, which finds its peak in the Metropolis jacket. At the End of the 20th Century, and with the uncertainty of the new Millenium, the desire of C.P. Company to create innovative practical clothes for the urban resident, led to the development of the cult jacket Metropolis, which became part of the line of Urban Protection. The main aim was to create a whole line of items, which could be transformed in protection if necessary.
Garment Dyeing
Garment dyeing is the name given to a process pioneered by Massimo Osti and his collaborators for C.P. Company in the early 1970s, in which a garment – usually made from white or raw un-coloured fabric – is only dyed as a fi nal manufacturing step, as opposed to the conventional method of manufacturing garments from pre-dyed fabrics. While the technique of garment dyeing has long existed, Massimo Osti and his collaborators were the fi rst to attempt the technique with garments made from multiple fabrics or fi ber types.
This process – which appears almost alchemical for those who witness it fi rst hand – produces a chromatic depth and intensity impossible to achieve with pre-dyed fabric, as well as enhancing the material characteristics of the fabric. Recently, C.P. Company wants to share this iconic feature with its customers. In 2018 the Company launched the Bespoke Colour service: the latest chapter in the story of garment dyeing. The customers can pick their colour and make their own garments.
Goggle Jackets
After studying a protective hood worn by the Japanese Civil Defence, Massimo grew excited about the idea of making a jacket with lenses sewn into the fabric.
The first prototype, which featured lenses sewn into an extended collar, like the hood which originally inspired Massimo, was produced in very limited quantities in Spring Summer 1988 in Mais cotton. Following further research into protective hoods used by the army, Massimo created several prototypes over the course of 1987.
Anti-gas goods, a new inspiration, gave him the idea of moving the lenses from the collar to the hood itself. The forms of this new version of the Goggle Jacket adopted the multifunctionality of the Swiss field jackets, whose intelligent pockets can perform numerous tasks. Another lens was added to the sleeve to allow the wearer to see his watch.
When C.P. Company agreed to sponsor the 1000 Miglia race, Massimo realised that this garment seemed as though it had been designed specifically for the legendary antique car race and he offered it to organisers and participants. It is from this version that the jacket model takes its unofficial nickname. Functional, timeless and aesthetically bold, this jacket has become a symbol of Massimo Osti’s creativity.
